About

CleanAILabel is an independent web tool that shows you which AI and personal details are hidden inside your photo — and removes them before you share it.

Why it exists

An image file carries far more than the pixels you see: which app made it, whether AI was involved, which device took it and where. Social platforms can read this information, and some of it — like location — can reveal more than you intended to the people you share with.

We built CleanAILabel to make that hidden layer visible and to put the file's owner back in control.

Who it's for

Photographers, designers, creators and anyone who wants to know what's inside their images before posting — for example, people whose real photo was labelled as AI because of a small AI retouch, or who don't want to share where a photo was taken.

What we do

  • Remove AI traces found in C2PA (Content Credentials), XMP, EXIF, IPTC and PNG text chunks.
  • Always remove location (GPS) data, while optionally keeping your photo's own camera details.
  • Return your image in the format you uploaded, without recompressing it, and re-scan the result to verify it.
  • Publish clear blog posts on metadata, platform labels and image privacy.

How the tool works

Everything happens in your browser, on your device. Your images are never uploaded; we have no image server, database or upload service. The file is read in a separate browser thread (a Web Worker), metadata blocks are removed, and the clean copy is scanned again so we only report what was actually removed.

See our privacy policy for details.

Responsible use

CleanAILabel is a metadata tool; it doesn't certify whether an image is real or AI-generated. You are responsible for how processed images are used and for following platform rules. Please read our disclaimer, terms of use and acceptable use policy.

Open-source components

CleanAILabel builds on these open-source projects: libheif (LGPL-3.0) and its browser build libheif-js (LGPL-3.0) for HEIC decoding; fflate (MIT) for ZIP files; Next.js and React (MIT) and Lucide icons (ISC) for the interface. libheif is loaded as a separate file and can be replaced as the LGPL requires; its source code is available at the links above.

Who runs it

CleanAILabel is an independently built and operated project. It's free and needs no account.
