How to remove the AI label on Instagram

CleanAILabel Team2 min read

If an "AI info" tag shows up under a photo you posted on Instagram, it very often comes from invisible tags inside the file itself.

Where the label comes from

Meta (Instagram, Facebook, Threads) reads industry-standard signals to mark content created or edited with AI. The main ones are C2PA records (Content Credentials) embedded in the image and the "digital source type" field in XMP/IPTC.

These signals aren't limited to fully AI-generated images. Small edits — Photoshop's Generative Fill, a phone's AI eraser, or Lightroom's AI noise reduction — can write similar information into the file. That's why a real photo can end up labelled too.

What you can do before posting

  • Drop the image into CleanAILabel; AI traces in C2PA, XMP, EXIF, IPTC and PNG text chunks are removed in your browser.
  • If it's a photo you took, leave "Keep my camera details" on: device, lens and capture date stay, location is still removed.
  • Download the clean copy and upload that file to Instagram.

Why there's no guarantee

Meta doesn't rely on metadata alone. Invisible watermarks, its own detection systems and your own "made with AI" disclosure can also lead to a label. Cleaning metadata removes the most common cause, but can't guarantee the outcome.

Mind the rules

Meta may require realistic AI content to be disclosed. Use the cleaner to fix a false label on a real photo or to protect your privacy — not to pass off an AI image as real. See our disclaimer for details.
