How to remove the AI label (C2PA) from ChatGPT images

CleanAILabel Team2 min read

OpenAI adds a C2PA record to images created with ChatGPT and DALL·E, stating that they were generated by these tools.

What's inside the image

The C2PA record stores, in cryptographically signed form, which tool created the image and when. In PNG files it lives in a chunk called caBX; in JPEG files it sits in the APP11 segment as JUMBF boxes. It doesn't change the picture, but it travels inside the file.

Social platforms and verification tools can read this record and mark the image as "made with AI".

How to clean it

  • Drop the PNG or WebP you downloaded from ChatGPT into CleanAILabel.
  • The tool finds and removes the C2PA record, XMP fields and other AI traces; the image isn't recompressed.
  • Once the report shows "C2PA / Content Credentials — Removed", download the clean copy.

Good to know

  • Once the C2PA record is removed, the image's origin can no longer be verified — and this can't be undone.
  • Some systems may still trace the origin through invisible watermarks or cloud records.
  • Taking a screenshot also drops metadata, but costs resolution and quality; the cleaner keeps the image exactly as it was.
