Why TikTok and Facebook add AI labels — and how to avoid false ones

CleanAILabel Team2 min read

TikTok, Facebook and Threads can label AI-generated or AI-edited content automatically. More often than not, the label comes from information inside the file rather than from the picture itself.

What platforms look at

  • C2PA / Content Credentials: a signed record stating the image was created with an AI tool.
  • The "digital source type" field in XMP and IPTC (for example trainedAlgorithmicMedia).
  • Invisible watermarks and the platform's own detection models.
  • The "made with AI" disclosure you choose when posting.

Why was my real photo labelled?

Small edits — a phone's AI eraser, Photoshop's Generative Fill or AI-powered noise reduction — can write an AI marker into the file. When a platform sees it, the whole photo may be labelled as AI content.

How to prevent a false label

  • Drop the photo into CleanAILabel before posting; AI markers in C2PA, XMP, EXIF and IPTC are removed in your browser.
  • Leave "Keep my camera details" on so the photo's own device and capture details stay.
  • Download the clean copy and upload that file.

Limits and rules

Invisible watermarks and platforms' own detection aren't affected by metadata cleaning, so the outcome isn't guaranteed. TikTok and Meta may require realistic AI content to be disclosed. Use the tool to fix false labels and protect your privacy. Details: disclaimer.
