What is C2PA? Content Credentials and AI labels explained
CleanAILabel Team2 min read
C2PA is an open standard built to record where an image came from and how it was changed.
C2PA in brief
C2PA (the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is backed by Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI and media organisations. A record made under the standard is called Content Credentials. It stores, in signed form, the tool that created the image, the edits made and when.
Where it's stored
- JPEG: JUMBF boxes in the APP11 segment
- PNG: the caBX chunk
- WebP: the C2PA chunk
- Sometimes the record is also kept in a cloud service and tied to the image with an invisible watermark.
Who uses it
ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly and some cameras add records; platforms such as Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok can read them to label content.
What happens when you remove it
Once the embedded record is deleted, the image's origin can't be verified, and this can't be undone. Cloud records and watermarks aren't affected. CleanAILabel finds, reports and removes the embedded record; it doesn't validate the record's signature.
See whether your image has a C2PA record — and remove it if you choose.
